Dallas, TX. - Organizers from all districts of Dallas have formed the Commemoration Committee to Honor Marvin Crenshaw and Roy Williams to lead the campaign to rename Marilla St. to M.E. Crenshaw Blvd. Dallas, along with other major cities across the nation have moved to remove statues, rename public schools, and create a society that refuses to honor racism and slavery. The Committee continues on in the spirit of justice and equality by honoring the only living plaintiff of a federal lawsuit that ended Dallas' discriminatory at-large voting system. Marvin Crenshaw fought to give all minorities in Dallas a voice in the electoral process, and won. The 14-1 system we all function under now is a testament to his dedication to justice and equality.
The Committee advocates to replace Marilla St. with the name of a community leader who reflects the cities core values - Equity, Empathy, Ethics, and Excellence. Marvin Crenshaw's work on Minority Voting Rights in Dallas deserves the highest honor. Maintaining the street that Dallas City Hall sits on as Marilla St., violates the core values of the City of Dallas. Rev. Young's mother has no historical or political connection to Dallas, and was simply a street created during Rev. Young's time as Street Commissioner of Dallas. The Committee will be moving forward aggressively in the coming weeks and months, and humbly asks for your support in our struggle to honor those who fought to shape the city we live in.
